Cremation Costs & Options

Over the years, cremations have become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional burials as they are generally less expensive. This not only reflects a significant shift in societal preferences for end-of-life services but also shows that priorities involved with cost and cultural practices are changing.

No matter how you choose to honor your loved one, Wujek-Calcaterra is here for you. We’re committed to providing transparent communication on the costs of our services, including cremation, and helping you find the best solution for your budget.

What Is the Average Cost of a Direct Cremation?

A direct cremation involves having the deceased cremated without a service or ceremony. The ashes are then returned to the family.

The average cost of a direct cremation in Michigan is around $2,246. Direct cremations are less expensive than traditional full-service burials, which cost around $8,900 in Michigan. Direct cremation is also generally less expensive than other types of cremation services.

The Cost Factors of Cremation

  • Transportation & Storage Fees

The distance traveled to the crematorium and the duration of storage will influence cremation costs

  • Cremation Containers

The type of container used for the cremation can affect the cost. A simple container is generally less expensive than a casket.

  • Urn & Other Memorial Products

The cost of an urn for storing the ashes can also vary widely based on the material and design. Additional memorial products like jewelry can also add to the cost.

  • Obtaining Death Certificates

There are fees associated with obtaining and filing certified copies of death certificates.

  • Crematorium Fees

These are the cost associated with the cremation service including the use of the facilities and staff services.

Casket & Urn Options

You can choose whether you want a standard container or a casket for the cremation service. Cremation caskets are commonly used for services that include viewings. After the viewing, the casket is burned during the cremation process.

The cost of a cremation casket varies based on its design and material composition. For example, basic cremation caskets generally cost under $200. High-end, elaborately designed cremation caskets can cost between $800 and $2,500.

After cremation, ashes can be stored in basic containers and boxes or decorative urns. The overall cost of the urn or container will vary based on the materials it’s made from and how ornate its design is.

At Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, we provide basic containers at no additional cost or you can purchase a decorative urn.

Cremation/Funeral Services

The type of cremation service you choose will also impact the cost. We’ve already mentioned that direct cremation services are generally less expensive, but here is a breakdown of what services you can choose from, what is involved in each service.

Direct Cremation

These are cremations without any extra services rendered. These only include the cost of the cremation and the chosen urn or memorial products

Cremations w/ Memorial Service

This service type includes a memorial in addition to cremation. Cremation ashes are already in the urn or container during the memorial service. Memorial cremation services are similar to traditional funeral services, except the urn (not a casket) takes the central place in the memorial.

Cremation w/ Traditional Service

The decedent is usually embalmed and placed in a casket for viewing and visitation. The cremation takes place after services. Readings, eulogies, music, and other traditional funeral elements can be included in traditional cremations.
