The Traditional Burial Process

At Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, we know you have much to deal with when a loved one dies, and many decisions to make. Trust us to guide you through the traditional burial process in America and plan a fitting tribute to your loved one.

Choosing a Cemetery

Unless you have a family burial plot, you will need to choose a cemetery and purchase a plot or a burial vault, which may be preferred by the cemetery. You don’t actually own the plot or vault, however, only the right to use it for burial. Additional charges you can expect are for “opening” and “closing” the site, a headstone or marker, and its installation. We can help explain your options and guide you through these decisions.

Planning the Memorial Service

The funeral home process begins with selection of a casket and planning of a memorial service, which is typically presided over by clergy. The ceremony may be held at the funeral home, a church or in one’s home. We can work with a church or family members to plan the service, which may include prayers, Bible readings and songs. Often, friends and relatives will present a eulogy, or summary of the decedent’s life. Those in attendance may also see the body and say their final good-byes.

Burial Service Can Follow Immediately or Later

You may choose a simple burial overseen by a member of our staff or a short graveside service, presided over by clergy or a family member, following the funeral service. Another option is to have the full funeral service and burial conducted at the burial site. For those who served honorably in the U.S. armed forces, military rites are given at the burial service.
